Businesses more open to mobile payments

Posted: 8/10/2012
By: Jaime O'Hara
Small business owners aren't all fully equipped with their own store and cash registers to ring up customers when they purchase one of their products, so they're forced to be a bit more creative.

With new technology, small business owners' jobs have become much easier with the introduction of Square, which allows mobile payments.

Starbucks recently partnered with Square to provide mobile payment options within its 7,000 stores across the United States. According to TheStreet.com, Starbucks is investing $25 million in the company, which was a vote of confidence.

"Square works," said Stephen Burke, vice president of mobile at Resource Interactive. "Its transaction costs are lower, it's secure and it's just going to get better as they raise additional capital and begin to build out [founder] Jack Dorsey's vision. This is the next inevitable step in the mass consumerization of mobile payments."

According to a joint statement released by the two companies, the partnership will quickly increase small businesses' ability to improve Square's new technology and a stronger, more widely available network.

"[Square] is mature enough and reliable enough and secure enough," Burke said. "Starbucks is going to stretch [the system]. That will ultimately benefit small businesses because they have a big corporation doing the heavy lifting for them."

Considering small business marketing is becoming more about innovation and creativity, companies might look to Square to provide an extra edge over their competition.

According to TechCrunch.com, Square is processing $2 billion in payments every year and has signed up an estimated 800,000 merchants in less than five years in the business.
