Eliminating self-doubt in small business

Posted: 8/14/2012
By: Lindsey Graham
Thousands of businesses are started in the United States every year, maybe even millions, but only a handful expand to be considered successful.

Why do so many businesses start, but never seem to finish the race toward being profitable and successful? The Huffington Post recently released an article that showed self-doubt could be the reason for many businesses not seeing the light of day.

According to the source, eliminating unproductive thinking and self-doubt in business starts with personal development, which could include anything from simple activities to improve awareness and identity to workshops that teach entrepreneurs how to be an effective leader who gets positive results.

Humans are believed to experience 70,000 thoughts daily. When the majority of those thoughts are negative, humans lead a life expecting failure and not fully pursuing the goals that were previously laid out for themselves. A lack of faith and confidence in who you are and what you can do has the ability to lead business owners down a rocky road, which can negatively affect employees and cause a business to not expand as much as it could.

The source recommends eliminating self-doubt, making it easier to be positive when a setback occurs. Business owners are also recommended to think about their favorite athlete and the process they might go through to be fully into their craft.

"Think about this: Every time an athlete fumbles, his or her mind is focusing on winning. When an athlete gets in a zone and thinks about the present, all goes swimmingly," according to Todd Herman, founder of The Peak Athlete.

Carrying out four simple tasks could create business harmony and eliminate any self doubt that might be present in the mind of business owners. The first task is to act now and execute often. The source recommends mitigating small business risks and take small steps toward goals. The second step is to change inputs. If the end result isn't what the business owner is happy with, they need to change their input in order to produce something they can be content with.

Changing associations can also be helpful. Aligning with another business owner who is also positive could be the difference between the business failing and achieving the success it has previously planned. Lastly, business owners need to change their self-talk in order to achieve their maximum potential.

According to BusinessKnowHow.com, the main reason businesses don't succeed is because the owners go into it for the wrong reason, which shows in the small business marketing tactics and the end product of the company.
