Mistakes small businesses should avoid

Posted: 8/15/2012

5StarControl recently released a list of money errors that small businesses shouldn't make, which could help entrepreneurs make their companies more successful.

5StarControl is a small business marketing website that gives tips to companies that are in need of guidance in creating a profitable marketing plan.

The first thing small businesses should avoid is not having an emergency operating fund in case business slows down. Emergency funds are created to keep a business afloat if unforeseen circumstances take place. Problems a company might face include unexpected structural damage to their building, production equipment needs and product fulfillment.

Small businesses should also keep up with the latest market trends, which could boost the popularity and reach of their business if marketed correctly.

“Keeping abreast of target market trends is essential to the life and longevity of online marketing for small business,” said Nancy Tran, of Business 2 Community. Tran recommends that local companies “track [their] profits across the board, and make sure you know where your success (or lack thereof) is coming from.”

Over-spending or mismanaging the budget can also be detrimental to a business' success. This tip also goes along with having an emergency fund just in case something happens. Properly managing the budget can be the difference between a business thriving in their particular market or falling into the cracks of being average.

Business experts often recommend that small business owners define their niche market and their unique selling proposition that differentiates their company from others in the same industry. Developing a sound marketing plan is also a profitable step in the right direction.
