Small businesses comment on economy

Posted: 9/19/2012
By: Lindsey Graham
The economy has gotten much better since 2007, when the recession prevented many companies from fully thriving and caused some small business to shut down permanently. Considering the country is emerging from financially troubling times, the George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management and Thumbtack.com released data expressing small businesses' thoughts on the economy.

According to the study, small businesses think the economy and jobs are the most important factors when debating who the next president will be. Ethics, honesty and corruption in government was the second-most important issues for small businesses.

Many small businesses are more in favor of President Barack Obama over Governor Mitt Romney as a result of the amount of support that both show for small businesses.

"Small businesses are deeply attuned to the effect of politics on job creation and the economy," said Dr. David Rehr, a lead researcher on the study from GWU's Graduate School of Political Management. "Entrepreneurs are feeling squeezed by the tight lending environment and want their political leaders to curb the influence of money in politics."

According to the key findings in the study, 40 percent of all small business owners nationwide have rated the economy and jobs as the most important factors when it comes to their choice for president.

In addition, only 3 percent of small businesses rate taxes as the most significant issue when choosing who they will vote for.

"Six-thousand small business owners have told an unusually nuanced story about the factors that drive their political decisions," said Sander Daniels, co-founder of Thumbtack.com. "When job creators speak, we need to listen."

More than a quarter of small businesses have reported that they are unsure who is more supportive of small business, Obama or Romney.

American entrepreneurs who are trying to increase their small business marketing efforts could secure help to assist them in paying for initial business expenses. Florida and Michigan small business owners reported that they were more concerned about the economy.

Facebook is making more moves to push ahead of its competitors in marketing. The social network page is expanding by syndicating ads across the internet and mobile apps.
