Steps to improve small business marketing

Posted: 6/27/2012
By: Lindsey Graham
Small businesses typically do not have the resources to hire an extensive marketing team. In fact, in most cases, a small business' marketing team consists of a single person, who may also be tasked with handling the company's entire communications needs. Compounding this issue is the likelihood that the small business is functioning on a tight and restrictive budget. As a result, it can be difficult for smaller companies to identify and implement effective marketing strategies.

But, this doesn't have to be the case. Below are two tips to help small businesses achieve marketing success even if they have a small team and limited resources.

1. Find and work with the right partners

Forming a partnership with a company in a different industry may seem like a waste of time, but it can actually open up a business to new demographics. Keeping an open mind when it comes to marketing opportunities is essential; sometimes the best campaigns are complete shots in the dark.

2. Test marketing campaigns

Small businesses tend to underfund marketing efforts because they have no choice; when resources are limited, other right-now needs get addressed before long-term business-building essentials - i.e. marketing. With that in mind, companies need to make sure the funds they do invest into marketing strategies are not going to waste. Whether the medium is social media, email or print, the small business needs to recognize quickly whether a campaign is effective. To do this, they can run diagnostic tests to determine how much the campaign resonated with recipients. Based on the results, business leaders can then determine whether to maintain a strategy or implement a new one.
