The use of public relations in small business

Posted: 9/24/2012
By: Jaime O'Hara
Some small businesses have underestimated the impact that a strong public relations team can have on a company's success. PR departments in the past have boosted a company from being a small business to a large corporation, which makes PR a vital aspect of getting a company off the ground.

Public relations is usually provided by businesses to give consumers an update on what's going on with their company and how it plans to continue serving its currently customers.

According to Dave Manzer, founder of PR Over Coffee and MyLocalReporter.com, small businesses rarely believe they are newsworthy, which can be their first mistake and limit their advertising and marketing efforts.

The Austin Business Journal recently suggested that small business owners who consider public relations to be important to their efforts should become familiar with newsworthy events that can assist their company and learn how to write a quality pitch and deliver it to the right reporter.

Agencies are available to help companies accomplish this task, but they have been found to be pricey in the past, especially if a small business has a limited amount of cash available to spend on advertising. The source reported that there are less expensive options that could help a company improve their small business marketing campaign, such as learning how to self-generate PR, hiring a small business PR consultant to walk through the steps toward a more successful campaign and using do-it-yourself resources to economically pitch stories.

According to the source, there are ways to generate news about your small business. Among those include being covered frequently by the local news media. Entrepreneurs should make sure news outlets are aware of events they are holding or new products or services that they are releasing to the public. Allowing news media to cover your company could significantly increase the companies brand, giving the business an opportunity to expand beyond the local market if the publicity is successful.

Being nominated for prestigious awards that honor small businesses for being the fastest-growing, having the best customer service or being the best place to work can also help small businesses grow. These awards could be given by a local newspaper or magazine, which honor small businesses in order to also increase their readership.

A workshop is being held September 27 in Lodi, California, to help small business owners perfect their marketing campaign by taking advantage of social media to expand their company. More companies are seeing the benefits of investing in small business, which could also spark the economy.
