Wall Street marketing sparks job creation

Posted: 8/21/2012
By: Jaime O'Hara
The New York Stock Exchange recently introduced the NYSE Big StartUp, which is a nationwide jobs and growth initiative that aims to promote growth through small businesses, startups and entrepreneurs.

The NYSE is home to 85 percent of the Fortune 500 and would be the largest economy in the world if it was an independent country, with $24 trillion in combined market cap of stocks traded on the exchange, according to Forbes.

“The NYSE is more than just about trading,” Marisa Ricciardi, senior vice president of global marketing with the NYSE, said to the source. “Advocacy and cause marketing is an important part of our proposition, and helping with job creation in this economy is something that we thought is worthwhile and necessary so we challenged ourselves to do something about it.”

With the United States employing close to 60 percent of all people in the private sector through its small businesses and creating 15 times more patents than big corporations, job creation is essential in improving the economy's outlook, the source reported.

The NYSE partnered with three non-profit organizations to form the Big StartUp initiative. The program also calls on the large corporations in the United States to guide small business toward success in order to improve the economy nationally, in addition to improving procurement, networking, business development, training, marketing and information sharing.

“The NYSE represents one of the largest corporate communities in the world," said Ricciardi, “but we felt we had to partner with three best in class organizations because we knew that we couldn’t tackle the problems alone and we needed to work together with other resources to deal with these challenges.”

According to Forbes, the three things that small companies need are access to a network of qualified leads, access to mentors and experts they can learn from and access to capital. With the recent partnership between small business and the NYSE, small business marketing might become more easy to the companies that once struggled with improving and expanding their business' reach beyond its current clients.

Crowdsourcing has also been recommended for small businesses recently, grouping the tactic into three categories, which include crowdsourcing for content marketing, social media marketing and for design.
