In its simplest term, journalism can be described as news reporting. When Johannes Gutenberg invented the movable type printing press in 1456, it paved the way for the renaissance of journalism. In 1594, the world’s first printed periodical, Mercurius Gallobelgicus, was published in Cologne and distributed. In 1665, the Oxford Gazette became the first English newspaper to be published on a regular basis. The first American newspaper was the New England Courant, which was more of a Colonial vehicle. It was believed to be published on the side by Benjamin Franklin’s brother James Franklin, a printer. Since its early beginnings, journalism has grown to become a worldwide phenomenon with every country having its own newspapers, magazines, and more. The main role of journalism is to inform the society of important or newsworthy events, though it’s also veered somewhat towards sensationalism and entertainment in more recent times.
